How can I set up to have new subscriber create an account?

  I want to get reader’s real names for the conversation in comments. I found BuddyPress on WordPress.org, but I see that no plug-ins are allowed on WordPress.com. I really like the idea of creating accounts and having users log in. Is there some capability that I haven’t found that will let me do this?

  You can add users to your blog as contributors, but we don’t have anything like BuddyPress (yet!).

  Just curious. I’m not a programmer. Why is a plug-in a security threat but a widget is not? Couldn’t you transform BuddyPress into a widget?

  BuddyPress is much more than just a widget and we don’t have adding support for it to WordPress.com on our roadmap at the moment.

  You can only add Widgets to your blog that have been pre-approved which is why they are not a security threat.
