Often posting get really long. Is there a way to splitt the posting so that the user can continue reading after opening the post?

Check the FAQs for the explanation of the posting icons. The More button is what you want. Or you can search the forums for the answer; we get that question at least once a week, so there are lots of threads about it.

What do you think I did before? If you get this question once a week, then put the answer on a place, it easily can be found. Searching for “more” or “posting icon” did not bring up any result. Answers like above are boring …

Actually we didn’t know that since you didn’t mention it. Please remember that we can’t read your mind. :)
The usage depends on which editor that you’re using. If it’s the normal editor, you have a button labeled “more”. If you’re using the rich text editor, it’s #13 in the FAQ or the one to the right of the tree icon. You add in the mark where you want the post to be split. What is before the mark shows up on your home page or searches or archives. When you click through the “Read more…” link, it will display the entire article.
Please keep an eye on your font tags if you use them. That’a a common problem with folks here as they put the more tag in the middle of two font tags and it causes issues elsewhere in their blog.
Oh, and just for reference, we also get the questions asked in the FAQ at the head of the forums asked many times over every day. Just because it’s in an easy to find place doesn’t mean much.

If you use the <!–more–> feature make sure you do the following.
WordPress> dashboard> options> reading>syndication feeds> For each article show summary – Not full text (which is the default option). NB this will also cut your RSS feed.

Now I found it in the FAQs (you pointed on that). But who can anticipate, that the correct keyword is “editor”? “tag”, “more” and similar keywords lead to “more traffic” and other useless answers for that problem.

Actually I found it again by doing a search for “read more link” on the FAQ. Came right up.
