  Do you have experience with css editing? I ask because this upgrade is not recommended for bloggers who lack that experience. There is no staff support for learning css and if you mess up staff will not correct your errors.   Themes differ with respect to sidebar width. Perhaps you could find a theme that has a wide enough sidebar?
  Is there a particular image or other thing you want to fit in your sidebar?
