How can I start YouTube video's in HD at 720?

Whenever I embed a youtube video in my blog, it will never start at HD quality 720. No matter what embed code I use it won’t start playing at 720. And the html code I use always changes into wordpress code.

If I use the HD suffix and embed it as iframe (as youtube suggests) the code is changed when I update and the video starts at 480. All other codes start the video at 360. But 480 isn’t what I want to use, since my uploaded video can play at 720.

Is there a fix for this? Or can ayone help me solve this problem?

  • The resolution for YouTube embeds will be determined by the width they are in your theme. If they are defaulting to 480 then that is the maximum resolution that can be displayed in your theme’s width.

If you make any video full screen you should see the HD options. Switching to a wider theme like Modularity Lite which has a 900 px wide layout would let you embed larger resolutions as well.

    Thanks for your quick reply.

That makes some sense. I’m actually using the Modularity Lite theme with the 950px column layout. HD video’s would need a 1280px wide layout, if WordPress automatically resizes them, though.

What I have seen on other sites is that the video can be started at HD 720 even though they have smaller boxes. Is this not at all possible in WordPress.com? This would be handy for fullscreen viewing, etc, without the additional clicks required.

  • It is certainly possible, but wouldn’t actually be necessary. If you were to display a 720px video in a 400px box, all you’d be doing is smashing 720px into the space of 400px, which would arguably be worse quality, and I doubt YouTube’s player even allows it.

When you switch to full screen, it should switch to the highest possible resolution, unless one isn’t available of course. Some YouTube videos are still 240px.
