How can I stop my blog spamming followers with summary emails of old posts?

  • Unknown's avatar

Followers of my blog have just started receiving summary emails with 10 old posts listed in the email. It started last week with two summary emails; the most recent 10 posts; and then the 10 before that etc. But now it’s sending the same email repeatedly each day to my followers. My blog had never previously sent summary emails, and I only want my followers to get an email each time I post something new (rather than re-sending old).

How can I stop my blog spamming my followers with repetitive summaries of old posts?

    Any help much appreciated, thanks.

  • Howdy,

    That’s definitely not expected behavior!

Each follower can set their own frequency—no e-mails, immediately upon publication, or a daily digest—which they can set individually at http://wordpress.com/read/edit/

In our logs, it appears the last e-mail would have been sent on August 9th when your last post was published.

Is there any possibility that subscribers are receiving e-mails from another provider that is hooking into your site using the RSS feed? Lastly, if you have a copy of one of these e-mails, can you forward it to support@wordpress.com , changing the subject to “For Kraft” and respond here when you do?

Thanks for your patience as we determine what might be going on. Cheers!

Thanks Kraft, I’ve forwarded you one of the emails.

It wasn’t down to each follower’s settings, because at least three followers had the same set of emails start up from nowhere.

However, I have been going through my Dashboard Settings and trying out different things to see if it stops the messages being sent out, and I may have come across a solution…

Under Settings > Reading > “Syndication feeds show the most recent… x items”, this was set to “10” and I changed it down to “1” (the lowest I could set the number to). For the last two days the summary emails seem to have stopped.

Could this have been the cause? The Syndication feed settings?

Thanks again for your help and hopefully this should have resolved things. If you have any other advice on this, it would be great!

  • Hi again,

It looks like your change confirmed my hypothesis. That e-mail was sent by Google, not WordPress.com, most likely from Feedburner.

Since Feedburner uses RSS syndication feeds to power itself, changing that setting on WordPress would change what Feedburner can process.

I’d suggest logging into your Feedburner account and determining if there has been something changed there that would have started e-mail delivery.

I hope that helps and please let me know if you need anything else!
