How can I tell if a blog address is available? Wanting to change address.

    I want to change my blog address to one that is deleted/nonexistent. When attempting to take this blog address for myself I am told that the address is currently in use, despite the messages on the page reading either:

    * This page has been deleted by the author(s).
    * This page does not exist.

    The address I really want gives me the first message. How can I get this address?

    When a site at WordPress.com is deleted, the URL is permanently gone and cannot be reused: http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/ .

    You can sign up for another blog name/URL that is similar, or you could perhaps register your own domain name: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/ .

    So I must register a new blog, rather than use the address change tool (Dashboard -> My Blogs -> Change Blog Address)?

    I am trying to keep this a free project for the time being, so I don’t think I will get a domain at the moment.

    Because I found a really killer address that… I can’t believe isn’t taken. So I’m even pretty hesitant to post it here.

    You can use the change blog address tool as long as the address is not taken. There are some good URLs/names out there still.

    Don’t post it here. Just go ahead and make the change quickly if that is the URL you want.

    But what I’m saying is, when I search the URL in my browser – it tells me that the blog address is not being used.

    Then I use the address change tool and I’m told that the URL is in use.

    I’m pretty confused by it – I’m quietly hoping wordpress staff may get in touch with me and query the URL for me.

    But yeah, I will try make a new account with it in the meantime – but I assume the same result will occur.

    Ah, that probably means that someone signed up for the username, but did not get the corresponding blog. In that event, that blog would be reserved for them. Take the blog name part of that URL and add it to the end of this link (replacing the ***) to see if that is the case.
