How Can I Transfer My Existing Domain Name To WordPress?

How do I transfer an existing name to my WordPress blog using a domain password?

Hi there, I’ve just moved from another hosting/website company to WordPress and I would like to be able to take my domain name, http://www.frockandrollonline.com , with me. The company have the domain name code/password for me to be able to do this, but I can’t see anywhere in the ‘Domains’ sections that allows me to do this, and when I type my domain name in, it says it’s “unavailable”?

    Thank-you in advance,

    Corrine

    Hi there!

Thanks for getting in touch. While we register new domains here at WordPress.com, we’re not able to accept incoming transfers of existing domain names. Therefore, we recommend that you keep the name registered at your current registrar. You can use the domain for your site here at WordPress.com by mapping the domain, as explained here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

If you have any other questions, please let us know.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers!

    Hi Robyn,

Thanks for your response, but sorry, I don’t understand your instructions AT ALL! The first part of your reply says that you’re not able to accept incoming transfers of existing domain names… then you say that I can map the domain? I actually already tried mapping the domain from my current registrar, and it said “this domain isn’t available”? How can I have it so that http://www.frockandrollonline.com points to http://frockandroll.wordpress.com?

    Thanks!

    Hi again!

Mapping is not transferring. When use domain mapping, you’re “pointing” your domain to your WordPress.com site.

So, at your domain registrar, you’d “point” your domain to look for our servers.

These are the instructions you’ll need to set everything up:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain

If you need assistance, you can tell your domain registrar’s support that you need your domain’s name servers to changed to:

    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

You’d also need to set up Domain Mapping here. Basically, that sets up our servers to “accept” your domain name as identification for your site.

You can do that by clicking the link below:
    https://frockandroll.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

Then, click the button marked, “Map a Domain You Already Own.”

You should be able to follow those instructions from that point forward. You may be given a warning saying that this domain name is already in use. You’ll have the option to tell the system that you already own the domain.

Just a warning: it can take up to 72-hours for everything to start working properly online after you change your name servers at your domain registrar. This is not unusual. So don’t worry if you’re not seeing things behaving correctly right away.

Also, as you already set up the transfer process with your domain registrar, you may need to tell them that you plan to keep the domain with them, afterall. You simply want to map your domain name to your WordPress.com site.

I hope this helps clear up some matters. Let me know. All the best to you!
