How can I try import to WP with old site live?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m planning to move from SquareSpace following the guide here: https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-from-squarespace/

You need a domain to create a site. Thoughts I had:
    – Junk/throw-away domain — is there an easy way to cancel/return it when done?
    – Sub-domain?

GoDaddy is our current registrar — don’t really want to transfer it until we prove out WP.
Our site is pretty basic, so I’m hopeful this will go smoothly.
    THanks,

I don’t have a site linked to this WordPress.com account

  • Hello there,

    Many thanks for reaching out.

In any case, I wouldn’t recommend deleting a domain in the hopes of re-purchasing this later on.

You can keep the domain and then connect the domain as per: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/

GoDaddy is our current registrar — don’t really want to transfer it until we prove out WP.

You can create the site under a temporary .WordPress.com domain until you’re ready.

    Thank you.

Creating the test site under a temporary .WordPress.com domain sounds perfect.
What I was missing was being able to connect a temporary/free mysite.Wordpress.com domain — that worked great.

Not sure if the best place to ask my next question… I followed the wonderfully simple steps to export/import our site from our SquareSpace. This completed successfully, but the new WP site looks like some default boilerplate: Hello World! Athletic Wear Print Campaign.

I selected the free option (just for testing this out) and the .xml export looks reasonable (did quick scan for some expected content).

    Suggestion?
Is there a way to re-start/re-load the site from scratch (of course trying the same import again sounds insane…)

  • The “hello world” post will need to be deleted manually. Importing doesn’t replace content that is there already, it just adds the imported content in as well.

Also, exporting/importing isn’t designed to copy a site exactly. That often isn’t possible when moving from one CMS (SquareSpace) to another (WordPress.com) because they aren’t perfectly compatible. It is designed to move your content (words, media, etc). You’ll likely need to spend some time working on your site design to either make it look similar to what you had previously, or create a new updated design.

    Does that make sense?

    Thanks.

I cannot find the content from our original home page anywhere. It was named “home” as is the default hello world page. It doesn’t render on the hpme page & I don’t see it renamed. AFAIK all the other content seems to be there.

Guess one thought I had was to duplicate the home page in SS and re-export. Then delete WP content & re-import (if I can find where to do that). Any other suggestions?

I can see I’m going to have to play with formatting/design.

    Thanks,

  • Hi there,

If I can ask, what is the URL of your Squarespace site? Is this it? https://www.pwcb.org/

I was able to view the page source for that site and determine that the title of the page (as set in Squarespace) is “Prince William Community Band”

I was able to find a page by the same name on your site, is this your missing content? https://pwcborg.wordpress.com/welcome/

Well that’s embarrassing, yes, it is.

    Thank you.

  • Not embarrassing at all. This is a different system from Squarespace and it’s easy to get a bit discombobulated in the transition.

Since you are new to WordPress you may want to consider one of our webinars here, which will help orient you to working with our page editing tools: https://wordpress.com/webinars/

    Thanks for rocking WordPress.com! :)

We’ve made good progress with the free plan using a temporary wordpress.com domain.

As is, I can only view our site when logged in – the public URL says coming soon. Is there a way to enable this first prior to upgrading?

    Thanks,

  • Yes, you can publicly launch your site by following the steps at https://wordpress.com/support/settings/privacy-settings/#launch-your-site
