How can I update my blog (and my wife's) from v1.2 to the latest version?

I am working on an 7 year old laptop, and my wife and I both set up individual blog accounts with WordPress in 2007. I did not realize that updates were not automatic, and therefore I am still working with version 1.2 (zionsgate.wordpress.com)! When my computer literate son and I tried to get the updates to the current 3.0 series, nothing worked and I am stuck with v1.2 still. My laptop runs Windows XP (with difficulty since it’s so old and prone to freeze up).
My wife on the other hand has a totally different problem: She has an iPad that we bought June 2010 (right when they came out). She decided this weekend that she is ready to ‘build’ content into a WordPress blog, and lo’ and behold her ancient one popped up from summer 2007 as an established account. Well, the horror of it all is that when she started doing ‘stuff’ (selecting a theme, naming the blog itself, trying to add pictures, etc.) all kinds of problems occurred. I then realized that she and I have the same dilemma: We’re both working with v1.2 when everything is now geared to the current version update. She located a WP app. in the Apple App Store, tried to load it- not sure if successful… but still there are many glitches that don’t process right. Ex.: She tried to add a couple of new blogs to her primary site, and the new ones with different names are all showing up with one name only. She can’t tell which is which! Also she still can’t upload photos, etc. into the primary blog even though the iPad app should be (?) operational.
It appears to me that both my XP laptop and her ‘old’ iPad need to have the latest WordPress version on our respective blogs, and that is primary the help we need to receive. How do we bring it up from v1.2 to the very latest version? Is there any way that we can talk with someone expert on this? We’re both retired, living on a limited pension income- and the Internet and social media in particular is a necessary avenue for purposeful communication. My email address is (email visible only to moderators and staff) and my home phone (our only phone) is 951.845.3701. We both need help and unfortunately cannot afford the steep fees charged by private Tech Support people.
I was also hoping to monetize two other ‘parked’ blogs that I have at ‘zionsgate.wp’, but of course all of this falls on the same issue of an ancient version hindering capabilities. I need someone with grace and patience since although I’m no dummy, technology still bewilders… Please contact me either via email or phone. I would so appreciate it; and my wife would too. My wife (Robyn Garcia) has the blog site- ‘robynsheart.wordpress.com’. As I stated she attempted to use a WP app on her iPad since the media uploads were not happening at all (photos primarily). The rest is listed above. Thanks…

All blogs at WordPress.com are up to date, technically http://zionsgate.wordpress.com/ is running a beta release of WordPress 3.5.
Where are you seeing the 1.2 at? If you’re just referring to the WordPress app on your iPad, you can always get the latest version from the app store. http://ios.wordpress.org/

But thought that I would make a very small contribution – if they are really moving from a 1.xx that would be a WordPress.ORG install (unless they are asking about some App that did not exist 7 years ago) then they have a very serious upgrade to do – about 5 or 6 hops I think since the .ORG software made some changes to the database over time and they will need some serious help from the people at .ORG
