How can I update/upgrade an old, free WordPress account to a newer version?

  A couple of years ago, I registered online for a free WordPress account. I never used it and forgot about it for a while.

  Today, I decided that I would like to start blogging however, my old version does not support automatic updates and doesn’t have an option under ‘Tools’ to update/upgrade. It doesn’t even have the version number on the dashboard or footer.

  I would like to update whatever version I have to a more recent one for all the obvious reasons – can you help please? I don’t understand the instructions for manual installation at all.

  Would WP make an exception in this case and delete all traces of me so I can start again?…

  The funny test name is fine – however we do need the URL (address) of the blog you need help with to give you accurate help –

  If you are here on WordPress.COM then the staff has taken care of all the upgrades for you while you were gone – also there is nothing for you to install either

  I’ve been updating a friend’s free account wordpress.com account and notice that the dashboard and left hand menu is different to mine, for example, I definitely don’t have a ‘Plugins’ section and no automatic update.

  testdanzig666.wordpress.com – is a blog here – there is a lost password option if you have forgotten it – that blog will not have a Plug-in Tab because you can’t use your own Plug-ins here – but you have a ton of extra Widgets here and many things built into the theme – less things for you to worry about –

  also no “Automatic Update” here – the staff do all the upgrades for you

  If you see a Plug-in Tab then you are on a WordPress.ORG install – the Dashboards look almost the same – that blog would not be hosted here
