how can I use the more tag?

the more tag is not working. I press the more tag button and nothing happens.

I tested the icon labeled “Insert Read More tag” in the editor at https://wordpress.com/post just now and it worked for me. I used Firefox 42.0 on a Mac in my test.
Can you try a basic troubleshooting step of clearing your browser cache and logging back in to see if that helps?

thanks, clearing the cache did not work. I press the more tag button and nothing happens. I thought I would see a line to break the paragraph or some symbol. nothing appears and the text looks the same when I see the website. any other ideas?

You’re right, a dashed line appears when I test it. It’s quite subtle though, very faint.
The next best troubleshooting step I can think of would be to test from another browser on the same computer to see if the same issue happens there. If it does not, then the problem is probably being caused by a local browser issue or setting or add-on of some kind in the first browser.

I checked the post again and it seems that the more tag appeared (several times) at the bottom of the post. I was expecting it to be appear where my cursor was after the first paragraph as I selected the icon. so it worked, but not in the right place. Is there some magic about selecting where in the text, the more tag shows up? thanks,

Good find! For me, it does insert the more tag at my cursor.
Are you perhaps using an outdated browser version?

I did not try another browser yet. ..I spent too many hours working on my blog yesterday and needed to get other things done. My firefox version is the latest. I have a brand new Macbook Pro.
will try on a different post. Here is another question. Do I need to insert the more tab while I am creating the document? I already created the document and wanted to insert the more tab later within the document. I noticed that my more tab inserted about 7 lines at the end. where I wanted to insert it in the early part of the document, where my cursor is, the tab went at the end. it seems that I ought to be able to insert the more tab at any revision.

No, you should be able to go back and add it.
I did test adding the more tag and could not reproduce the problem you described. I tested with Firefox 42.0 on Mac OS X 10.10.5. Since I am unable to see the problem myself, that is why I suggested more testing on your side to rule out a local browser issue. If you don’t have time to test that, it’s okay and I can keep an eye out for other similar reports and work on it with someone who has more time to take a closer look. That’s no problem. In the mean time, I’m trying to think of what else I can do to help you. Another thing you might try would be to copy one of the more tags that were inserted at the bottom and then paste it into the top. Another possible solution would be to move the more tag using the HTML editor. Hope that helps!
