Hi there,
Please read this first > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you aren’t clear about what domain mapping is and what it does then you can read this > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2012/04/02/do-i-need-a-domain/
I also recommend reading this as well Domain Mapping – Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgradingThe subscription for domain mapping of an existing domain is $13.00 per year for one blog.
If you would like to use your domain name purchased elsewhere and map from your free hosted wordpress.com blog to it, then you will first need to set up domain mapping. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
After you make the domain mapping purchase here > Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades and do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.
WordPress.com will seamlessly strip out the www. for your convenience. www is an old protocol from back when everything was under separate server hardware. www (www.example.com) was the web server, mail (mail.example.com) was the mail server, ftp (ftp.example.com) was the FTP server, print (print.example.com) was the print server, etc. These days, everything is run under the web server, making www. redundant and a waste of four characters.
This URL http://http://www.backstageusa.com/ will seamlessly redirect from to http://http://backstageusa.com/ from all http://backstageusa.wordpress.com/ URLs.

RATS! I made a mistake and typed the http:// twice above when that link
