    How can one change the image on using Jetpack to post blog posts?

    In particular, Facebook for now. When I got to post a blog, it looks like it is pulling the blog logo image. I would like to change it to a different image. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

    Nate

    Hello there,

    May you please provide the URL of the site in question?

    Please note that this forum is for sites hosted on WordPress.com only. If your site is using the open-source WordPress.org software you need to seek help at these forums:https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

    You can find more information about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com here: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

  • Hi Nate,

    For what site is this?

    What image Facebook uses depends on the Open Graph tags set in your site’s HTML headers. If you’re using Jetpack’s OG tags, then Jetpack will always use your featured image first, provided one is set and big enough. If no featured image is set, it will look for another useable image in the post content, and failing that, it will fall back to the site icon set in General Settings. It works the same for sites hosted here on WordPress.com, as all WordPress.com sites use Jetpack OG tags.

    That said, sometimes an image Facebook pulled in with an older post that was shared becomes stuck in their cache, and then keeps appearing for subsequent posts. Facebook also only checks a post the first time you share it, so if you initially shared it without a featured image, and then later edited the post to add one, the preview on Facebook wouldn’t update automatically on subsequent shares.

    In that case, you can force Facebook to flush their cache for a particular link by using their sharing debugger. Just paste the URL of the post, and click the button to re-scrape the post.

    You can find more details, along with a link to Facebook’s debugger, in this support page:

    https://wordpress.com/support/facebook-image-thumbnail/

    And you can find information on Jetpack and Facebook Open Graph here:

    https://jetpack.com/support/publicize/troubleshooting-publicize/

    If you’re using another SEO plugin like Yoast SEO, that plugin’s OG settings will override Jetpack’s. In that case contact support for the plugin directly to find out how you can control what image is suggested to Facebook in the OG tags. But the bit about images being cached on Facebook still apply in that case.

    @therefoiam,

    A more appropriate response here would have been to refer the OP to Jetpack support, given that they explicitly mentioned that plugin.

    The WordPress.org forums only provide support for the core WordPress software, and the WordPress software doesn’t itself create OG tags for social media services. On self-hosted WordPress installations you need an SEO plugin like Jetpack or Yoast to do that.
