How Can People Find My Blog?
-
So I created a blog and now I’m trying to figure out how people are going to find it. I attached “Categories” to it — are Categories the same thing as Tags?
My blog is here: hoping2adopt.wordpress.com
I’m not seeing it show up when searching on the Tag words Adoption, Adoptive Parents, Open Adoption, etc. Those are the Categories I attached to it, I think. Not sure what I’m doing — help!

Categories and tags are identical here at Wp.com. But you won’t show up on the category/tag pages until you’ve made posts in those categories. Have you done that already? There’s a slight lag time, but it should be less than an hour.’
If you have a more general blog promotion question, I recommend a forum search or an FAQ search, because there are a lot of suggestions already out there to help.

To get listed on search engines:
Submit your site here on the right – http://www.submitexpress.com/ Submit it to only the top 40 search engines. And also claim your blog at Technorati and place Technorati’s buttons and such on your site. And make sure to ping your blog. I ping mine at http://technorati.com/ping and http://www.pingoat.com/ And email other similar sites like yours for link exchanges on each other’s blogrolls. And to get listed on search engines, try to get your blog on at least one person’s blog that is already listed on Google. This way when they get indexed, your site will then be indexed.

Okay, so now I’m even more confused! When you say it won’t show up on the category/tag pages until you’ve made posts in those categories….not sure what you mean? I wrote a blog posting (see hoping2adopt.wordpress.com) and then added categories to it. Is that what you mean?
-
Yes, that’s exactly what I mean. Some people put categories in their category list, but don’t make posts, then wonder why their blog is not in the tag pages. You’ve used the tags correctly, but you’re not showing in the tag pages.
You will not show up if your blog is marked “private” or “mature”. And the posts will show up on the global tag pages in the order they’re written, not the order they’re posted, so if you make drafts and sit on them for a long time you’ll be at the back of the tag pages listing.
Also, please change the link on your username to your WordPress blog. It saves us time checking your blog and your Myspace page is irrelevant here.

I checked your tags and those are done right. Tags are so that people in the tag community can find similiar topics as to theirs. If you click one of your tags, then you can see the other posts all over WordPress about that same topic.
I have three categories. My blogroll is one. I don’t tag and so all my posts fall into the Uncategorized category. I also have another category with nop name and have no clue what it is. Categories confuse me though. Here’s the faq on categories:
