how can someone subscribe to my blog
-
i am sure this has been answered on the forum or FAQ but the language used to answer it is not understandable by me. i am a neophite at this and just want to blog and not be a computer programmer.
my question is: how to i configure my blog so that it is plain to readers that they can subscribe to it?
i dont understand feeds or rss etc. and wordpress does not explain it in language that a layperson can understand.
any help out there?
i may need to switch to blogger.com?
thanks,
ray

You have a few options:
1) You can place your feed directly into your sidebar using a logo and your feed’s URL. Please refer to the following FAQ on how to accomplish this: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/23/put-your-feed-in-your-sidebar/
2) You can offer e-mail updates via Feedburner. This process is outlined here: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/11/how-can-i-offer-email-updates/
Switching to Blogger will not change the RSS feeds, their functionality, definition, and how users will subscribe to them. If you provide the user with your blog’s feed URL, they can use any RSS reader they like to subscribe to it – this can even include web browsers, including Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
In short, your blog is already configured to offer an RSS feed (updates) to other users. It is up to them to actually use the feed, however.

I have to add my two cents here b/c I am a neophyte too and bubel’s explanation — clear as I’m sure it would be to someone already familiar with the terms — was too advanced for me. “Feeds, “Feedburner,” “RSS feeds,” “RSS reader,” are words from another language that I need to understand before the explanation makes sense. And until I understand the terms, I will update readers by e-mail : )

RSS (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary) is a way of providing/obtaining updates for a particular blog or web site. As soon as the blog or web site updates, so does the RSS feed; updates are “fed” to you dynamically, as the content changes (i.e. posts are added to a blog). Otherwise, it would be difficult to stay current on all of your favorite blogs from around the web!
Users can obtain all of the feeds from their favorite blogs by using RSS readers – software applications that grab the updates to blogs/sites and give them directly to you. Users “subscribe” to their favorite blog feeds using these readers.
Think of it as when you subscribe to a magazine. When a new issue is published, you receive it in the mail, via the postal service. The postal service is equivalent to the RSS reader, in this case. Lame analogy, but it’s all I could think of on the fly!
