How can spreadsheet entries be posted as an interactive (sortable) database?

This is not a problem, but a request for technical assistance to make our work more productive.
We have a spreadsheet database with several hundred entries which must be regularly updated. We want the listings in this database to ‘auto-report’ into a categorically organized and formatted boilerplate for the newspaper we publish. Several of the database listings appear multiple time, in various categories, in our publication, and our objective is to automate the process… so that we only have to update the database (not each categorical listing).

The INDEX contains all of the individual organizations listed in our database. The CONTENTS lists the various categories.

Here are your options for spreadsheets here at WordPress.com. These will allow you to embed the spreadsheet on your site but you can’t do more advanced stuff.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/google-docs/You can’t directly manipulate the database here at WordPress.com. If you want advanced database capabilities, you might want to see if the self-hosted option is better for you. Please read this to understand the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org.
