How can users turn off the "Scroll to Top" nuisance thingy?

Although I contribute to a couple of WordPress blogs, I am writing about a recently ubiquitous annoyance on other WordPress blogs.

I put a lot of effort into customizing my browser to provide the maximum viewing space. The new float-on-top box at the bottom of many WordPress pages is an utter nuisance because it robs screen a few lines of text at the bottom of the page, and is very distracting in addition.

Can WordPress — please — provide an X in the corner so users can turn it off? Better yet, can there be a WordPress global cookie so that visitors can turn it off permanently?

Thanks for you consideration of this. (And better yet, I hope blog owners will simply remove it from their code — a simple Ctrl-Home accomplishes the same thing).

Being that that box at the bottom is the wordpress and theme credits, and given that wordpress won’t let us hide that (not allowed) there is nearly zero chance they will give people a way to hide it when reading a site here.
