How can we get back to the way our site was before trying a new theme?

We’ve had trouble with our site’s outdated theme, so we last Thursday 3/5 we backed it up and tested (without saving, we thought) a new theme. Now it’s a mess, and restoring from the backup doesn’t work. How can we get back to the way it was before (anytime from 2/27/2015 to 3/4/2015)?

    Hi Jim,

Some features like your site’s custom CSS and widgets are specific to the theme you’re using, so switching themes can deactivate the CSS and widgets you were using before.

I restored the custom CSS you had before switching themes — you can view and restore previous CSS revisions in your site’s dashboard if you need.

You can also reactivate widgets you were using before by heading to Appearance > Widgets in your site’s dashboard. At the bottom of the page there, you can view your deactivated widgets and re-add them to your theme’s sidebar.

If there’s anything more I can do to get your site back to the way it was looking before, please let me know!

Thank you! That looks much better.

The main remaining problem is the menu and page structure; there are now duplicate menu items and pages have been moved to different headings. We can fix that manually, but is there a faster way?

    Hi Jim,

With the menu settings there are no revision histories, so there’s no automated way to go about it.

If you know you’ll need most every page it may best fastest to create a new menu, check all your Pages and click Add to Menu once, then set the new menu to your Menu Location — rather than click multiple times to delete all the duplicate items from your current menu.

    Best,
