how can you get a blog name that someone already has, even though they no longer
-
Someone has the username that i want – but they’ve not used it for 5 years. Does a block name have an expiry period if it’s not being used or is it possible to take over their user name?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The best you can do is leave a comment on the blog in question to see if the user would be willing to transfer it over to you.
-
Not even if you contact them and they give you the password and you then become its administrator and then change the password?

The only way it’s possible is if you can contact the blogger who has the blog and they agree to transfer it to you. If the other blogger agrees then this must take place > http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account

Thanks. I’ve emailed him but his email doesn’t seem to exist either.
Surely there must be an expiry time limit for unused blogs? If not, there’ll be no word combinations left within the next few years.

I gave been here almost 4 years now and I have seen people post on this and go on and on. The result is always the same. There is no expiry date at this point in time.
I want to kindly suggest that you consider registering another blog using a variation of the blog name you want and get on with your life.

Do you know that you can use a nickname rather than your username as a display name? See > http://en.support.wordpress.com/change-your-username/

Wow! Now you have confused me completely. wordpress.com provides free blogs and free hosting. The email addresses we used to register our accounts and blogs under are kept entirely private by Staff.
There are lots of free email providers available so if you want a shorter email address then why not check them out. We can post any other email address we have on our blogs for readers to use or none at all, and simply create a contact page with a contact form on it instead. > See http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/

Okay now I understand what you mean. You want a different URL that’s shorter than the one that ends in .wordpress.com. That’s possible. You can purchase a domain name and domain mapping for your blog. See here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/

it doesn’t seem to want me to have the address i want.
Never mind, i’ll stick with what i’ve got for now.
Thanks -
I do not understand you. What or who is “it” please. Are you referring to attempting to register a wordpress.com blog for which the username is already taken? If so that will not work.
