  How can you put your site into maintenance mode without a plugin?

  Hi!

  If you are working on your WordPress.com site, and want time before making it public, you can consider making it private. Open https://wordpress.com/settings/general and set your site’s Privacy setting to Private.

  That way, it will not be visible to the public and only those whom you have given access to see will be able to view the contents of the site.
