How do create excerpts that show up in an archive search for my site?
-
Hello:
I have my blog posts set up in Categories to assist folks in finding my recipes. Is it possible to set things up so that when a reader does an archive search, that is clicks a category, an excerpt will show up in the search rather than the full content, so they can see several or all of the posts on the first page of the archive results?
For example, if a reader were to click Categories>Dessert there are 27 posts for them to look at, but right now only two show up….I tried a test, adding an excerpt to items in a category that has only 2 selections (Category>Dessert) to see if just the excerpt would show up, but the full post shows up, up to the “Continue to recipe” tag.
I also tried changing my settings to “Summary” rather than Full Text under Reading, but that did nothing to change the internal archive search…
Any ideas?

Hi there,
Unfortunately it is not possible to modify the way that category pages display with the theme you are using, but you may want to create your own custom index pages using the Display Posts Shortcode, which can be used by itself, or with text on the page.
For example, this shortcode will display a list of all you posts under the “Desert” category, along with an excerpt.
[display-posts category="dessert" include_excerpt="true"]You could then add these index pages to your site menu to feature them for your readers.
Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Jerry:
Thank you for getting back to me. Yes, this does help and with some study I think I can set up these index pages.
I have a couple of questions:
1. Is there a way I can set things up so that all the items in a category appear on the page? I tried it with a couple and it seemed only the first 10 showed up…
2. I am considering changing themes, as Elemin has a few limitations that I am working around, including this one. Can you point me to a few alternatives? I am looking for something that will showcase my recipes and photos, is clean and responsive, allows excerpts, integrates social, allows for lots of choice for color. I have already purchased the custom upgrade and will be happy to purchase another premium theme….I am considering Yumblog but wonder if there are others that I should consider as well.

Hi, Me Again:
I figured out the answer to my question on increasing the number of posts listed in an archive.
I’d still like to get your ideas about a different theme.
And new question:
How do I get sub-categories to show? For example, I’d like to create an archive page to find recipes by Season, with subcategories for each season. These categories are already set up on Gathering Flavors…. I tried different configurations but could not get the sub-categories to show….What am I missing?

Hi:
I think I am getting the hang of things on the archives….thanks for your help…would still like some ideas on a new themes, as asked about above. -
Hi Dena,
2. I am considering changing themes, as Elemin has a few limitations that I am working around, including this one. Can you point me to a few alternatives? I am looking for something that will showcase my recipes and photos, is clean and responsive, allows excerpts, integrates social, allows for lots of choice for color ….I am considering Yumblog but wonder if there are others that I should consider as well.
In my experience, picking a theme is such a personal choice that it’s hard for me to make a suggestion. That said, Yumblog really seems to have everything you need, and works well with your content.
You can also click on the “Find a theme” button on the Theme Showcase to search for themes with various features. For example, here are all the responsive themes we offer: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/responsive-layout/
Also, if you want to add some pro formatting to your site (whatever theme you choose) you may want to give the Recipes Shortcode a spin. The formatting adds a nice touch I think.
Cheers! :)

Yes, I have recently updated all my recipes using the shortcode and will take a look at the theme link you noted about.
I think we can close this thread now. Thanks for your help.

Cool, glad you found that shortcode on your own, as not everyone does.
Happy blogging! :)
