    Hi there,

Because your domain is still registered here at WordPress.com, you need a WordPress.com site for us to link the domain upgrade to. You can manage the domain by going to your WordPress.com dashboard, under Store > Domains (to manage the domain settings) or Store > My Upgrades (to manage the renewal settings).

Since the domain points to your WordPress.org site, anyone who tries to visit the WordPress.com site will be redirected to your WordPress.org site at that domain. The WordPress.com site is essentially just a placeholder that isn’t visible to anyone — it’s only there so you can manage the domain upgrade.

If you prefer, you can transfer your domain to another domain registrar by using this guide: Transfer a domain to another registrar

Then, you can delete your WordPress.com site by using this guide: Delete Site

If you choose to go this route, please read all of the warnings carefully. Deleting a site is permanent and can’t be undone, and the site address will not be available for you or anyone else to use in the future.

Just to clarify, if you delete your WordPress.com site the free WordPress.com site address will not be available in the future, but of course your custom domain is yours to use as long as you have it registered. If you transfer the domain to another registrar, deleting the WordPress.com site won’t affect that domain or your WordPress.org site. :)

Please let me know if you have any questions!
