How do I access .index files to add plug-ins make minor changes?
-
I’m a wordpress rookie, and I’m trying to make changes to the .php file and index files. However, everything I’m reading tells me to go to Appearance —> Editor, but that doesn’t exist on my wordpress admin area. Am I required to upgrade or something?

Hi there,
We don’t allow plugins or the editing of the core files which make up your account on WordPress.com for security reasons. Plugins are a feature only available for self-hosted blogs provided through WordPress.org. You can find out more about this topic here: http://support.wordpress.com/plugins/
For more information on the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, please see: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Thank you so much for the quick reply. That helps a lot, and also makes sense. The follow on question, then, is that I already paid for the domain upgrade through wordpress.com, so if I wanted to transfer hosting to wordpress.org, is the transfer pretty seamless of my current site or do I have to start all over? Thanks again

The transfer of any content you’ve created is pretty easy and we’ve created a help article which will walk you through the process:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org
Moving the design which you may have chosen is not quite as easy, and so you might spend some time getting that up and running again.
If you’re interested, we do offer an upgrade called Guided Transfer (available in the Store section of your blog’s Dashboard) where we take care of everything for you: http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
