How do I add a banner ad to the sidebar of my blog

  I have been working on this for 2 hours! All I’m trying to do is add a banner ad (from Gawker Artists) to the side of my blog on the homepage. Gawker gave me the code, but I can only figure out how to add it as a post, not as a permanent banner ad on the left. Can someone please help??
