how do i add a blog with my own domain

  ummmm
  this is probably a dumb question. i’m new here. i want to add a new blog that i will create but when i go into the add a blog it wants me to input a xxx.wordpress.com domain but i want to use my own

  amazingly i can’t see the answer in faq

  Dashboard -> Upgrades -> Domain :)

  just to clarify – do i have to open a wordpress blog first then upgrade it? it seems like the only option there at the moment is to give a gift…

  Yes, you have to have a blog to assign a domain name to it. :)

  IF you go to your admin => upgrades => domain and then add a domain name, it will tell you if it is available and let you know how to register it as well. As well, check out this FAQ:
