I want certain widgets to appear on certain pages, not all of them. How do I do this?

That’s not the way the vast overwhelming majority of themes are designed so you will have to choose a theme that provides for that. Academica and Twenty Twelve do but for others see http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/02/26/sidebars-and-other-widget-areas/
