How do I add a widget that is not listed on the theme
-
If a widget is not listed on the theme, how do I add it. Or do I have to get another theme. If so how do I find out what widgets a theme supports before I buy it?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The number and types of widget areas vary, but all of the WordPress.com themes have the same available widgets. Those not included are unsupported by WP, though in some cases you might be able to create a functioning widget with HTML code in text widget.

Please post the code for the widget between code tags here so we can examine it. Alternatively, link to a page online where we can examine the code.

Thanks, timethief.
Clarification:
I said, “…though in some cases you might be able to create a functioning widget with HTML code in text widget.”You can always create a functioning widget with HTML code in a text widget. I meant that you might be able to use code provided for a specific widget if it is written in HTML, other acceptable code. See the Code support page.

Thanks for putting me straight. I thought the list of widgets available in my theme was not the same as that listed by wordpress but it seems they are – more or less – with maybe some of the names updated or edited. I have also been somewhat confused by reading a series of discursive articles such as https://learn.wordpress.com/get-configured rather than the more straightforward support material which I must now do.

You’re welcome. Let us know here or in a new thread if you have additional questions. All of us are in the process of learning about WordPress. : )

Now I get it!. I think I need to use the http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page stuff which is much clearer to follow when starting at the beginning. I realize wp.com and wp.org are not quite the same of course but wp.org appears to have the better support content for me.

http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page stuff may be clearer to you, but what you find in those support page will not necessarily be applicable to WordPress.com accounts and websites. For example: at the outline page New To WordPress – Where to Start > Step Two — Make a Plan, 5 of the 7 parts of that step are inapplicable to WordPress.com. The two that are applicable are the two that are not links to separate pages. I wouldn’t recommend going to WordPress.org support pages for information on WordPress.com.
