How do I add an “add this” or “share this” button?

I saw another thread asking the same question. However, it does not really answer the question.
Simply put, I want a blog that has basic necessary features that allow a blog to become popular, such as the add this/share this button(s). I would also like to be able to add other features.
The other thread on the subject seems to say a person needs to download some wordpress software (?) and upload it to a server (?).
I do not know how to either of these things, as I am not a web developer. Do I need to know how to do web development in order to use the share this button or to have a blog that uses such buttons and features?
The other thread says that this can’t be done, yet clearly it is done often as I see many wordpress blogs using these brilliant techniques to propagate their blogs. So, my question is how DO we do it?

As you have not posted the URL for the blog to which you refer we do not know whether or not you are referring to a wordpress.com blog or to a wordpress.org self hosted install on your own domain. The two are very different. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
wordpress.com blogs do not have FTP access and do not have plugins. we cannot upload anything into them at all.
We can have social bookmarks that we place on our posts prior to publication and we do have an AddThis widget.
