How do I add another widget to the main bar where it has 'about' and 'home'?

I would like to add several more widgets to the main bar at the top of the page, next to ‘about’ and ‘home’. How do I do that and do I need to upgrade to premium in order to do that?

My blog uses the Twenty Eleven theme and is called: http://anactivistabroad.com/

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • That is your navigation menu and these instructions should help you out:

Take a look through that page and let me know if you have any further questions. I’ll be happy to help.

Thanks so much for the link. I have watched the helpful tutorial, but don’t seem to be able to follow some of the steps and I wonder if it’s because the Twenty Eleven theme won’t allow me to add to the menu. I’d really appreciate any advice you can give me.

  • Can you give me a specific example of something you would like to add?

Hi. I want to add more menus. I think maybe my theme won’t allow that without upgrading. If anyone can answer that, it’d really help!!!

    Hi there!

Twenty Eleven only supports one menu, and you can’t access any more with this theme by upgrading.

It’s worth mentioning that this theme does support widgets in its sidebar and footer. If you’d like, you can add extra menus or other content to those areas by heading to Appearance > Widgets in WP Admin:
    https://ladida555.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php

On the above page, you can drag and drop any widgets from the left, including the custom menu widget, to the corresponding areas on the right.

If this doesn’t help you achieve what you’re after, I’d encourage you to have a browse through our theme repository. All of our themes have different options and supported widget areas. It’s well worth taking the time to have a play about and find a theme that matches up to your requirements:

Let me know if you have any extra questions around this.

Thanks for taking the time to give such a detailed response. I am very grateful. I decided to try the free two-week upgrade to see if it meant I could add menus, and I can so I am testing a few things out and then will probably pay to have a premium account.

Again, many thanks for your considerate reply.

I do have another question actually. How do I get the About page as the first page that everyone goes to when they search for the blog? It’s weird as since I added all the menus the home page has now gone. I really don’t know what I’m doing but am enjoying the process!

    Hi there. :)

You can set your About page as your front page via the WordPress.com Customizer. To access the Customizer, firstly head to My Site in WordPress.com and then select the option to Customize in the left-hand sidebar. Here’s a direct link for you:
    https://wordpress.com/customize/anactivistabroad.com

From here, choose the Static Front Page tab and then check the ‘A static page’ option. You’ll see that you’re able to assign your site’s ‘Front page’ and ‘Posts page’ from the dropdown menus here.

Hope this helps! Let me know if any of that needs clarifying.
