You aren’t allowed to and doing so will result in a suspended blog.
Here’s what gets a blog suspended:

The only advertising program at WordPress.com is called WordAds and it’s for blogs on their own domains.

Thanks so much for all of that! I went on the links you provided but they say you can have a few affiliate links on your page: “Most affiliate links for reputable merchants are welcome on WordPress.com. Feel free to post relevant affiliate links when blogging about books you’re reading, music you love, clothes that strike your fancy, gadgets you’re drooling over, or whatever is of interest to you and your readers”. As long as I’m not pushing it in comments et. Then it seems ok to have just one or two affiliate links?

Posting of some affiliate links is possible, provided the blog is an actual blog and not just a storefront with links in every post driving traffic to external sites. http://en.support.wordpress.com/affiliate-links/ closely.
WordPress.com allows bloggers to insert text affiliate links within post and page content to most third-party affiliate programs, provided they are not the primary content of the site in question.
Image affiliate links in posts and pages and any banners, affiliate links in sidebar or footer widget areas, are still considered to be advertising and are not allowed on WordPress.com blogs.

Hi thanks! Ok so I think it should be ok then- I have an actual blog with original content written by me only. I had thought of including one or two affiliate links to recent products I have bought that fall in line with my blog content. This is not the primary aim of my blog and only a small extra so it seems that would be acceptable?

Yes it does seem to be okay in your case, but don’t get link happy when it comes to posting affiliate links and you will be fine.
