How do I add users in a private blog?

i started a second wordpress blog, this time just for my family. i don’t want anyone else to have access to the photos on the blog, just my family members. i already set the privacy setting to private, only 35 users. what next? how do i add my family members as users? do i invite them or do they sign up? sorry, i just can’t seem to figure it out.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You need to invite them. Just send them invites from the users part of the wp-admin pane.

They need to sign up for an ID at http://Wordpress.com and then you can invite them. You must use the same email address to invite them that they used to register, ie you have to send it to that address.

if i just send an invite from the users section, it won’t work unless they get an ID first? does getting an ID mean they need to get a blog first?

what if they don’t want to start their own blog, but they just want to be able to view this blog?

They do not have to get a blog. They only need an account. Once they have their accounts, you send invitations to them, using the email addresses they used to sign up for their accounts.

You can’t invite users until the users exist in WordPress.com. And tess is right, there is an option to just sign up for a username, they don’t have to create a blog at all.

great, thanks for all the input guys! i appreciate it. One last question, so once i’ve added my family members, do they need to log in to wordpress first before they can view the blog?

Yes.
That is how wordpress recognizes them.Sometimes the browser cache will keep the log-in. If a family member uses a public computer, tell them to clear the cache before they leave the computer or the next person will be able to view your site.
