How do I apply a downloaded theme to my blog?

You should be able to – there’s hundreds (perhaps thousands) of WordPress themes available to download. I’m trying to work out how to do the same thing actually.

Again, if it’s a wordpress.COM blog, you can’t download and install a template. We have two options. 1. Use the themes provided by wp.com or 2. buy the CSS upgrade and tweak/write your own to your hearts content. Option 2 is not recommended if you have no clue about CSS. Those themes you see are for self-hosted wordpress.ORG blogs.

talkingtiger, believe us when we say you cannot. Each theme that is available here has to be modified and change to work on the software used here at wordpress.com, and each has to be modifed so that it does not introduce security holes that could cause problems of all of those blogging here at wordpress.com. You have no access to the directories where the themes must go and no FTP access is allowed.

Believe me, I speak as one with the CSS upgrade: it is NOT as simple as uploading a downloaded theme. You have to adapt them. Think of it like adapting a novel into a stage play; there’s just no way to get around a fair bit of work yourself, and you do have to know what you’re doing.
WordPress.com and WordPress.org are different, and there’s a thread at the head of the forum about the differences. Those themes are for WP.org blogs.

*nod* Was just trying to figure out how they could have formed that impression is all. *smile*

Everyone using Sandbox is adapting those themes or writing their own, that is true. But mostly I think the confusion arises from the .org/.com nomenclature.

SO, the theme that I want to use – Cutline…I cannot find it anymore on the available themes…does this mean I cannot upload, FTP or whatever it to my blog?
