How do I archive the posts on my blog?

I want to archive my previous blogs to make my site more organized. Please tell me how to use the [archives] shortcode: I went to a ‘new post’ window and copied that in – neither in the subject line nor in the actual blog area did anything happen…
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Every time you publish a post it’s automatically posted into the Archives by the software – you do nothing. If you wish you can display an Archives widget. Alternatively, you can create a static page (not post) and place the Archives shortcode on it.

thank you, timethief, for your answer. I think I did not explain what I am trying to do with the posts in my blog, sorry about that. I admit I don’t know much about all these words and blogging in the first place.
I noticed that on other blogs (on yours as well), there is a list of months or years where the previous blogs go: like on yours I saw f.e. “July 2012 (11)” or something = how do I do that? Put the old blogs in such a list. I thought that would go with ‘archives’ but maybe that’s not it.

That is an Archives Widget
Dashboard >> Appearance >> Widgets >> Drag and drop the widgets you want – the Archive Widgets has some config you can do to it if you want
