How do I assign the main picture of the post?

I have problems with my pictures. I have now added the “top posts widget” but the pictures that are showing are not the best pictures to describe the post. how can I change the pictures shown in the sidebar?

You cannot change the images displayed in the Top Posts and Pages widget. You can only change the images displayed in the posts and pages. http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/top-posts-widget/

but why would it pick the second picture in the post and not the first? is this random? -
I don’t know how the widget is programmed to select images for display and it’s not stated here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/top-posts-widget/ If you think this is important enough to get a Staff answer on, knowing it’s the weekend and it’s unlikely you will get a quick response from them, then type modlook into the sidebar on this thread.

thanks! It doesn’t have to be solved quickly but it would be good to know. Especially when you post a tutorial or something really picture heavy you want to have the best picture representing the post.
The same picture is chosen when using the Pin it – Button so I guess there is some sort of criteria. -
