How do I back up my site on my computer

I have heard stories of other blog platforms that closed down and all the blogs were lost. How do I back up my site so that I cannot lose the content if this happens. I have bought my own domain name but I still seem to have to access the site through wordpress.

Hello and Happy Halloween! This link should be helpful to you Sarah:
It details instructions on how to export your blog to an xml file that you can later import if you ever need to. The xml file will contain your posts, pages, comments, categories, and tags.
WordPress.com sites are also backed up as well so if anything happened they would be able to restore a copy for you. Hope that helps. :)

Note – the Export exports text only, and LINKS to Media (pictures etd) – it does not include any media in the export file – you would need to save Media files one at a time to your PC for a full backup – not a real good way to get a mirror of your site unless you did a local host install on your PC
The WordPress.COM does a continual backup with three massive server farms in different locations that are mirrors of each other
There are offsite backups done also – but that is only to protect against all three server farms being hit at the exact same time by large meteors
the system is not designed to protect you from yourself – i.e. you delete something by mistake
If WordPress.COM went bust I would expect some type of warning time for you to move your content to another host – but with something over 30,000,000 sites here an providing VIP hosting for such small companies as CNN & many Fortune 500 companies, things should be stable for a while I would think
