Hello @betweenthedashes,
Since your site is hosted on WordPress.com, all the heavy lifting is being done for you. If you would like to download your content, you can head to Tools -> Export to manually do a backup of your content.
-
Exporting will give you the text only (no media)
WordPress.COM is hosted on three massive server farms in different locations, the mirror each other so backup is automatic. They also have a backup system that is off site, it is only designed to be used in case all three server farms are hit by meteors or something like that at the same time.
You get the same backup system that such minor players as CNN.COM and other companies, radio stations and so on
The WordPress.COM system is not designed to give you back your content in the event you hit the Delete Key and blog an image or text into the bit bucket

Hello, I have a free wordpress.com blog. But would like to purchase a new theme but am afraid to lose all my pictures, categories, tags, and blogs I follow once I purchase and activate my new theme. From what I’m reading here, if you have a .com site there is no need to backup? once I activate my new purchased theme will everything automatically roll over to the new theme?
Thanks,

Changing a theme just changes the way your site looks, NO effect on the content, your content is safe (unless you hit the delete key :) )
