How do I backup my site?

I’m wanting to make some structural changes to my blog but want to have a backup of it as it is now in case something gets messed up or lost. Is there a way I can do that? Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can backup the content of your site at “Tools” “Export” but you can’t backup the theme or widgets/custom menus etc. What I’ve done in the past is create an extra test site (which I kept private) where I could play around with trying different themes etc without upsetting my main site.

Thank you, themagicrobot! I don’t know how to create an extra test site. Any tips? I’m not super techy so would need directions.

Oh, I see. You just create a new site where you can experiment. Makes sense. And it can be made private. Ah. OK. So it’s sole purpose is to try things. Thank you for responding so quickly!

Just one more thing. If I export my site to back it up, it won’t change anything on my site, right? And I’ll get the files and then can download them into a Word doc? Or just keep the link? Thanks for your help.

Exporting all your content (to back it up) will not change anything on your site. It will create an XML file that contains all your content, but it’s not really in a format you can read (with Word or anything else).
It’s mainly meant to be a straight backup, and if there would ever happen anything to your site, you can use this backup XML file to restore all your content again (by importing the file). You can also use this backup file to import your content in another WordPress site, if you want to.
Basically: an export takes the contents from your WordPress site and places it into this file, and an import takes the content from the file and places it in a WordPress site.
