  how do i cancel a file upload?

  You can’t cancel it. Just elimine it.

  From your Media Library, of course:

  Manage Your Site’s Media

  Or, if the file is inserted on a post/page, you can delete it permanently:

  thank you, but it’s not in my media file yet, and i can’t see it.it’s still uploading from creative commons. i see the upload in progress in the ‘Add Media’ dialog box on the ‘Edit Post’ page. any clues how to stop it?

  Yep. Log out from WordPress.com, reset your browser (clean the cookies, cache, etc., before). And log in on WordPress.com again.
