How do I change a file name in media library?
-
I uploaded a file (web-booking-form-nh14) which was automatically assigned this name. I needed to change something in the file and upload it to my media library with the same name, as I have already distributed the URL (with original file name) to my distribution list. WordPress automatically increments new uploads by assigning a “141”, “142” etc. even after I’ve permanently deleted all “nh14” files. I need the original “nh14” I’d to save me redistributing the URL. How do I do this?

Hi there,
It looks like the file name you uploaded was web-booking-form-nh144.pdf. In this case, I think the file name may have been adjusted by your computer (to prevent file duplication) not by WordPress.com. I did a check and the file web-booking-form-nh14.pdf is not available, so you should be able to upload that file to your Media Library without having an extra character added to the end.
Can you make sure the file you’re uploading is named like this?
web-booking-form-nh14.pdf
Let me know if that works!

Hi,
I uploaded “……nh14” and as you’ll see (I’ve left the file in my library), it’s been tagged “….nh145”. I don’t think this is happening at my end, as all I did was drag and drop the “nh14” file into the upload box.
The “nh144” file you see is the result of my previous (4th) attempt to upload “nh14”, after I modified the original “nh14” that had uploaded. Even though I deleted “nh14” before the revised upload, the revised files slit continued incrementing “nh141”, “nh142”, etc. even though I deleted each increment, before uploading.

I really apologize. I thought this was possible, but I’ve recently confirmed that it is not. Once you upload a file, it gets assigned a specific file name. Even if you delete that file, the file name will not become available again in the future due to the way our cloud storage works.

Thanks for clarifying this. It therefore makes it impossible for files whose URL has been distributed, to be updated.
