How do I change menu bar colour?

  • Unknown's avatar

I was fiddling around with the colours on my site a few months ago and some how or other I ended up with menu bar in white and my blog posts in a green colour but I’ve no idea how.
I would actually like my menu bar in the green colour and the blog pages in white. please could you help by telling me what to do. if I go to Customising colours and backgrounds, under the word background it shows a block of the green colour with palettes written on top.
    Thank you!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • If you click Palettes there, you’ll be able to choose new color palettes.

nope can’t see the option for changing the menu colour. I am also having the same issue you literally can not see the tiny font OR the text because you can’t give the menu a background to help it stand out.

yep just checked it again there is NO palette to customize font colours the menu colours at all

  • Hi @annabellalawsblog, I presume you have a different site from the first poster, so you might have different customization options with a different theme. Would you send a link to your affected site?

no it’s the same one there is literally no colour option for the menu and font on any of them. you can do back ground colours of the main back ground but can do nothing for the menus :(

  • Hi @annabellalawsblog,

The theme you have on your site annabellalawsblog.wordpress.com allows you to select fonts and color palettes. This is what I’m seeing when I open your site’s Customizer:

Don’t you see those two options?

So some themes don’t allow you to customize font and colors?
I’m using Stow and would like to change the menu bar color, but I when I go into optimizer, I don’t have those selections.

I’d add a picture if I knew how!

  • @moellerjf,

Stow does not have these options, no. Stow is one of our newer themes designed specifically for the block editor, and we’re working on a way to make these changes directly from the editor itself.

Even in themes that have custom colors, on a free site you’d only be able to select from a small number of preset color palettes. Something like changing the color for the menu bar only can only be done with custom CSS, regardless of your theme, and that requires our premium plan.

    @kokkieh,
Thank you for the information. Is there a way to see what is customizable on a theme before using it? I really like the cleanliness of Stow but not crazy about the pink.

  • Sometimes, the theme’s page details what can be done, like https://wordpress.com/theme/twentytwenty

At the very least, from there you will be able to live preview the theme without affecting your site.

Thank you! I managed to figure out how to preview different themes and found one that was more color appropriate and was able to switch themes without losing content or layout.
