how do I change my archives to help readers find specific blog posts?

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like my archives to list my past topics, such as “Destinations” I have written about, rather than be organized by Month. Is that possible? Of perhaps I could have an archive by month AND an archive by destination so that if a visitor wants to go directly to my post on Colombia, he/she can do that without having to look through my whole blog. Please help!

    Hi travelesq,

It sounds like you’ll want to take advantage of using Categories on your posts:

    Organize Posts with Categories

When you are writing posts about destinations, make sure you put the Category “Destinations” on the post.

Once you’ve added Categories to your posts, consider adding either the Categories widget to your side bar, or making a Category Page in your menu to a category listing so that your readers can find your “Destinations” articles easily:

Thanks for your response. I am not sure I explained myself well. I have done a number of posts on different vacations. What I would like is to list all those vacation destinations on the right so if someone wants to see my Anguilla post they can simply click on “Anguilla” in the right and they will be taken to that post. If they click on “Los Angeles” then they will automatically be taken to that post. Those are just two examples. When I go to categories and add “Anguilla” as a category, for instance, it looks like it appears on the right but it is not “clickable” so it’s just a word listed on the right but not something a visitor can click on and then be taken to that post.

    Hi there,

It appears that since you responded you took the next necessary step to make each category a link. A post must be assigned into that category. However I did click on your “Anguilla” category link on the right and was correctly brought here:

    http://travelesq.com/category/anguilla/

So it looks like you’re all set. :)

Right now this category only has one post, but if you ever go to Anguilla again and write a new post — assign that post to the category “Anguilla” as well. Then when your reader clicks on “Anguilla” they’ll see both posts regarding trips to Anguilla.

As you continue going on trips and writing new posts, you can create the new categories right in the post editor as well.

    Best,

    -Alex G.
