How do I change my content width?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there

I need some help that I can’t seem to find elsewhere. I am using the WordPress theme ‘Cubic’ for my photoblog. BUT, I find that the content width as viewed on my laptop is too narrow for my taste. The pictures are very small (768 pixels wide). I would like the image to stretch the width of the blog page (1200 pixels). How do I do this? I usually embed images from my 500.px page, but I’ve also tried directly uploading images. Regardless of what I do with the code, the image is either cropped to a width of 768 or reduced.

How do I get around this? I would ideally like to embed my images from 500px to WordPress at a width of 1200 pixels (full screen width). Could you please help me with this. I am no HTML expert but can follow instructions. Thanks in advance.

  • Hi there!

You wouldn’t be able to increase the width of the theme without custom CSS and that is available on plans Premium and above.

You can also check out some other themes that do support full width layout:

Hi. Thanks, but I have tried out some full width templates, but when I’ve previewed them they still show a small image with lots of white space on both side. In effect, even on the full width templates my image only covers approximately 50% of the page width. I wish I could upload a screenshot to show you what I mean.

Basically I’m looking to be able to post images that fill the screen from end to end the way a featured image does. Is that not possible at all in WordPress?

  • You can change the size on the image you add:

    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/image-block/#resizing-images

They will not exceed the width of the site content though, for that you would need to change the Block settings to set it to full width:

    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/image-block/#wide-and-full-width-images

    I hope that helps :)

Sorry, nothing seems to work. I just don’t even see the icons that are shown in the link for wide and full width images. I’m really frustrated. I’ve been at this now for 2 days, and regardless of what I do I still get that narrow column of content with tiny images.

All I want to do is post 500.px images in my blog post at full screen width with some copy below it and a headline. Is it possible to give me step-by-step instructions on how to do this?

Or is this just not doable?

  • We can give it a try and make sure that the block width setting. Which post or page are you working on?

  • To elaborate, there might be something going on with your local set up or browser.

    – try clearing the cache: https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache

    – disable any browser extensions.

    – check if any updates are due.

I’ve switched off all extensions and cleared the cache. I don’t think any updates are due.

This is the post I’m trying to edit (if it works I’ll do that on all new posts): https://sonofthemorninglight.wordpress.com/2020/05/29/ventura-beach-3/

I’d be happy if you give me instructions for a new post instead. I need to bring an image in from my 500px page ( https://500px.com/son-of-the-morning-light ) into the WordPress post, and have it stretch either full width (like a featured image) or at least close to full width.

    How do I do this?

  • The full-width option will only appear for images added using an image block in the block editor. Your site is currently set to use the classic editor, where this option doesn’t exist.

Additionally, your current theme, Cubic, is several years old, and long predates the block editor. Cubic hasn’t been updated to support styling for new features introduced by the block editor, like full-width image alignment, so even in the block editor you won’t see this particular option while your site is using Cubic.

So the only way to achieve what you want here is to use custom CSS to make the image wider, or else to switch to one of our newer block-editor themes – those are the first group of themes you’ll see when opening the theme showcase.

Right. I see. OK, let me try that.

Sorry, guys. I just can’t get this to work. A change in theme seems like it will require me to completely restructure the content and menus on my blog. Either that or the theme previews aren’t accurately showing me the changes. Either way, it’s day three now and I can’t really spend anymore time on this.

Wordpress was so fun and easy when I got on it 15 years ago, but just seems beyond me now. Maybe I’m just too old and slow for this now.

Thanks for trying to help, but I guess I’ll have to leave things as they are, and just accept the small images.

    Cheers
    David

  • I know that when one gets frustrated it’s better to leave the things as they are but, if you would like to get back to this sometime later let us know what exactly have you tried and we’ll advise.

On the new themes, if you add an Image Block and set it to display full width it will be displayed as such. To show you how it works, I copied one of your post to my test site with the Twenty Twenty theme, have a look what you can do with your images there: https://d.pr/i/xCBrlo.

If you need help, let us know, we’ll be happy to clarify further :)

OK, thanks. Maybe I’ll have another shot at it next week.

So I just thought I’d give it one more try. I picked a theme called Mayland which has full width content, but rather than apply it immediately to my blog, I created a new dummy blog so that I could see how my current posts look. So I created a new post in the Mayland Blog, and copied content from the Cubic Blog’s posts. So the Cubic code doesn’t seem to work in the new block editing format. Which means if I convert my Cubic Blog to Mayland, I still won’t be able to make use of the block editing or full width features. Editing wouldn’t be possible for my existing content, and I’d get full width images only on new posts.

  • Unknown's avatar

You can see the new blog in Mayland theme here: https://somlexperimental.wordpress.com/

You’ll note that the first post visible on the home page is with existing code as it was in Cubic. It cannot be edited to the Mayland full width format.

So I guess converting to a new theme has limited value for me.

  • Was the post you copied over written in the classic editor?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, because that’s what I’ve been using for years.

  • Are you speaking of the https://somlexperimental.wordpress.com/2020/06/04/ventura-beach post?

You currently have that image set to the Wide Width alignment setting, not the Full Width one.

    https://d.pr/i/BhHZey

You need to change that to full width, and click the Update button in the editor, before that image will appear at full width.

  • Unknown's avatar

It cannot be changed to full width. I’ve tried for a day or two. I can set full width only on completely new posts composed with blocks. Anything that has been composed in the classic format can’t be changed even if the theme is changed. Please see my previous comments.
