How do I change my domain name when I upgrade to a custom domain?
-
I would like to change the domain name of my blog to laura-silver.com instead of laurasilverconsulting.wordpress.com. I tried visiting the domain “store,” but it wouldn’t let me switch to laura-silver. It would only let me upgrade to laurasilverconsulting.com, which I don’t want. I searched the forum, where someone suggested that I create a new blog (laura-silver) on my existing account and then “export” the old content to the new blog. When I tried this, the prompt said I could only use letters and numbers in my domain name, unless I wanted to purchase laura-silver.com. I do want to purchase laura-silver.com. Can I make the name change and the custom upgrade at the same time? If not, what’s the best way to go about it?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
Have you tried going to Store->Domains and typing in laura-silver.com in the Domain to Add box? Trying that just now worked for me (obviously, I didn’t complete the purchase).
Hope that helps!

Thanks, kraftbj. Yes, I had tried that. My question is, once I purchase laura-silver.com, can I export the content from my wordpress.com blog into it, or must I recreate the entire thing at laura-silver.com?
(When I said it wouldn’t let me switch, I meant that I couldn’t have laura-silver.wordpress.com, which would be free.) -
if you are keeping your blog here but just changing then name – AFTER you buy the name – then you buy or do Domain Mapping – that changes the name visitors see for your blog but does not change the base blog name – the base blog name stays the same and you work in the old Dashboard
Visitors just see the custom domain name
