How do I change my email address when it says it is already being used?

I want to change my email, but it says it’s already used. I set up two accounts on accident. One with my gmail address and one with a school account. I want the original one to have the gmail account. I deleted the other account with the gmail address, so now I’m left with my school account. However, when I go to change the address, it says this email address is already being used.

Hi there,
You have two separate email address settings at WordPress.com.Blog notifications for the admin (like comment moderation, Likes, new subscriptions, etc) are sent to the email address at Settings -> General in the Dashboard.
Personal notifications (like comments on your post, subscription emails, and upgrade renewals) are sent to the email address at Users -> Personal Settings in the Dashboard.
