How do I change my Gallery's image sizes?

  • Unknown's avatar

When I go to my gallery page, the images will be displayed full size. And the images will shrink or enlarge depending if I shrink my browser. I want to keep the photos a smaller and consistent size. I tried editing the dimensions of the image itself, but it turns out that the site will just stretch out the image to meet the maximum width dimensions resulting is bad resolution. Does anyone know how to change that feature? I don’t want my images to be at the maximum width (or ratio) that the theme has.

    Hi mikesaechaophoto,

I’m not sure that I’ve understood exactly what you mean, but perhaps this might help.

What you could do: insert a gallery in a post/page as you would usually do. Leave everything as it is (thumbnail grid gallery type) and take let’s say 2 columns.

Then click on the “text” tab in the post/page editor, and you’ll see a code that will look like [gallery link="file" columns="2" ids="xx, xy, xz,"]

After columns=”2″, you insert size=”medium” (or size=”large”, size=”thumbnail” or size=”full”) depending on what you want.

Size will also depend on your theme width. And you might also have to alter the number of columns, depending on the image size you want (full-size images and 6 columns won’t work of course). To display your images of that gallery in max. size, you’ll have: columns=”1″ size=”full”.

Also, make sure that you have the “image carousel” enabled in your media settings.

Adding the “size ” and “column” parameters to the shortcode will only work with the default thumbnail (sic) gallery. It will not work with any of the newer mosaic/tile styles.
    Refer this:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/

And you may want to read this as well, this isn’t from the official documentation, but might still be helpful:
http://gammagirl.wordpress.com/2008/07/27/not-the-official-wordpresscom-gallery-faq/ particularly “Can my Gallery thumbnail images be bigger?”

    Hope this helped a bit.

Hello there, As the author of that last document (thanks for the mention), I hope you don’t mind me jumping in.

While you can limit the size of the thumbnail (small, medium, large) and the number of columns when inserting a default thumbnail gallery, when you resize a browser window or look at the gallery from a different device, like a tablet or smartphone, those images will resize regardless.

The short version is that Galleries, as defined here https://en.support.wordpress.com/gallery/ resize to fit the width of the theme’s content column depending on device.

But I also see that your site at mikesaechaophoto.com is using one of our Premium themes, Bindery https://wordpress.com/theme/bindery It’s looks like Bindery uses the Gallery feature to display images in a specific way. You might wish to inquire with the theme author on how to change your images. As a part of the theme purchase you have access to a special forum where you can post when you are logged in with the username account that purchased the upgrade or theme. https://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/forum/bindery

    Hope that helps too.
