How do I change my header image to be the right size?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Every time I try to insert the size it calls for, it wants to cut my image in half. My image is 800×500 but it wants it to be 960×270, so I change it in the edit image section, but it still wants to cut it in half.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

    It looks like you were able to figure this out as your header is now 960 x 270 px on your blog. Can you confirm this is working correctly on your side?

    Hi Jeremy, Sorry for taking so long to get back. I had a little emergency. Anyways, I solved it for now by cutting the top and bottom half of the image. I couldn’t figure out another way of doing it.

    I saw that you also replied to my problem with changing the font of one word in my title. I’m not familiar with CSS but I did understand the logic behind the coding you wrote down. I need to change the word “French” in my title to a cursive-y font that is called French.

    Hi,
    I have another question that is not related to Home Sweet French Home. I have 3 domains with wordpress and I now need to direct them to a new site. I have read a lot on here, but I really don’t understand how to get an authorization code to move my 3 domain names to be used by the new site.

    That’s going to be a bit trickier only because the word “French” is in the middle of your site title. You could set-up this up through using the following CSS, which defines separate styles for “French” and “Home”:

    #logo h1 a:after {
    content: “French”;
    font-family: “Font”;
    }

    #logo h1 a:after {
    content: “Home”;
    font-family: “Font”;
    }

    In that instance, you would want to change the title of your site to “Home Sweet” to avoid the duplication of “French Home”. Unfortunately, then, the title of your site in the tab of the browser and in search engines would just be “Home Sweet”. I’m not sure that would work for what you’re looking to do. However, if you let me know the exact font you’re looking to use for “French”, I can set it up so you can see how it would look.

    There are two main ways of accomplishing this:

    1. You could transfer your domain to another registrar following the instructions here:

    Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar

    2. You could change the name servers on your domain to point to your new site following the instructions here:

    Change a Domain’s Name Servers

    The main difference would be that with option #2, you would need to remember to come back and renew at WordPress.com each year.

    Does that make sense?

    Let me know what option you want to go with and what other site/server you want to move your domains to. I’ll be happy to provide additional instructions!

    Also, rather than spread our conversation out between two tickets, let’s keep all conversation regarding both the logo and the domain here to avoid confusion. I’ll go ahead and close the other forum post with a link back to this one!

    Thanks for the information. I would like to change the name servers but the website I am directing it to says that there should be a forwarding section. I didn’t see that with wordpress. WordPress is asking me for a name server and I don’t see that information anywhere with the new site. The new site is Keller Williams. They are saying “Set up a CNAME Record (Alias) on the ‘www’ host for the domain you would like to use for your website – Login to the website you used to purchase your domain name and navigate to the area where DNS and MX records are managed and controlled. Point the ‘www’ host to your agent website URL” so I am lost as to what all that means. Can you help?
    Also about the Home Sweet French Home…there is no way to differentiate between site header and what appears in the title bar? I have had different headers and site titles before.
    Thank you for your help.

    At WordPress.com, you can point your domain to another service using one of two methods:

    1. Custom A records, which are explained here:

      http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/setting-custom-a-records/

    2. Through changing your name servers explained here:
      http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/change-name-servers/

    Can you write back to them with something like this?

    Hi!

    WordPress.com does not support domain mapping through setting CNAME records. However, they do support mapping via either changing the name servers on the domain or setting a custom A record. Would either of those options work? If so, please let me know the name servers or the correct A record.

    Thanks!

    That should get us the information we need.

    Also about the Home Sweet French Home…there is no way to differentiate between site header and what appears in the title bar? I have had different headers and site titles before.

    With some themes and plugins on self-hosted sites, it is possible to differentiate the site title from what appears in the title bar. However, on WordPress.com, the site title automatically appears in the title bar. The main way around this would be to avoid displaying the site title text and use a custom header image instead to display your site title. To do so, you would need to follow these steps:

    1. Navigate to Appearance -> Customize -> Site Title and uncheck “Display Header Text”. This will remove the title and tagline of your site.
    2. Modify your current header image to include your site title and tagline with the fonts you want.
    3. Re-upload the header image to your site

    Your site title would still display in the title bar, just not on the actual site. Does that make sense?

    I am hoping this means that it worked!

    Hi there!

    Currently, the name servers for those domains seem to be still pointed to WordPress.com. Can you let me know the name servers you were trying to use? I will make sure they are set correctly!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi!
    It is not telling me the name servers, but this is the site that it should point to http://x422639.yourkwagent.com/

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi!

    In order to map your domains to the subdomain x422639.yourkwagent.com, you would just need to purchase the Site Redirect shown here:

    Site Redirect

    If you purchase the redirect for that domain, you can set it up as the primary domain so all of your domains redirect.

    Let me know if that’s what you’re looking for!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yes, that is exactly what I am looking for. So I would only have to pay $30 for all 3 domains?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi!

    You would actually only need to pay $13 for all three domains. Basically, you would buy the Site Redirect upgrade for kerrijrealtor.wordpress.com. Then, you would set the redirect as the primary domain on your account. All of your domains will be taken care of!

    Instructions for setting the redirect can be found here:

    Site Redirect

    Let me know if you have any additional questions!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thank you so much for the information on redirecting. I have accomplished that now.

    So, about the title for Home Sweet French Home. The font I like is called “French” and I want just the word French to be in that font. Could you set it up for me? Thank you so much!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there!

    Great! I’m glad the redirect worked for what you were looking for.

    Regarding the “French” font, as I mentioned previously, using the CSS script I mentioned before may not be the best method moving forward. If you use the CSS script, you would need to set-up CSS for both “French” and “Home”. So, your site title would just read:

    Home Sweet

    Then, in CSS, you would add “French” and “Home” to the end. In the tab at the top of your browser, readers would only see Home Sweet instead of your full title.

    What I would suggest instead is to create a custom header image complete with all of the text you would like and the background you want. This way, you can adjust the header text manually while putting together your header element. Then, you can add your custom header image following the instructions here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/custom-header-image/

    Does that make sense? After you have the header image uploaded, you would want to navigate to Appearance -> Customize -> Site Title and uncheck “Display Header Text”. This will remove the title and tagline of your site. Otherwise, your site title will display twice (once in the custom header and another time on the actual site).

    Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the process!

  • Unknown's avatar

    I remember you said that, but I really struggle with the whole header image thing. This template is so restrictive with the size that it allows pictures to be. Remember this was the whole reason I originally sought help, I couldn’t make my image the size it wanted until I cut the top and bottom off my original image. I also don’t have a lot of experience in editing images with text…

  • Unknown's avatar

    I completely understand! Unfortunately, that looks like the best way to accomplish what you’re after. If you create a header image that is 960 by 270px, it should fit with the site perfectly. Can you give that a try?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Ok, what program would you suggest using to do that editing in?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

    I’ve had good experience with Pixlr:

    http://pixlr.com/

    Give that a try and let me know if you run into any stumbling blocks!
