How do I change the custom DNS so that my email works with a mapped domain?
-
Hello,
I’ve just mapped a custom domain to my wordpress, and am happy to see that it works! However, the email is having problems. The information I got from my original domain source shows that the DNS is priority 30, pointing to mx.naomitoms.com, with four hosts: two ‘*’ and two ‘@’. Currently the wordpress DNS is set to mx.naomitoms.com with priority 30, but when I enter * as the host/source, it says that’s taken already.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for your help!

Hi there,
Those email records won’t work now that your domain is pointed to WordPress.com. If you still have email service with your domain registrar (where you bought the domain) you’ll need to get different email records to add to your domain now that it’s mapped here.
I’d recommend sending your domain registrar a message like this to get those records:
My domain’s name servers are currently pointed to WordPress.com. Could you please provide me with the complete MX and/or other DNS records I will need to enter on WordPress.com’s end, so that my email on this domain will work?
I can help you add those records here, once you get them. Alternately, you can follow our guide to Add Email from any email provider you choose.
Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

I’ve received the information from my domain provider; they told me to “update MX record of domain with the priority as 10 and pointing to: mx.domain.com in their zone file records”.
I tried doing that Thursday evening, but my email still hasn’t started working. What I did was to go into the Edit DNS records in My Domain on WordPress, add a new DNS record – MX for naomitoms.com, pointing to mx.domain.com, with a priority of 10. I then deleted the previous MX DNS record pointing to mx.wordpress.com to avoid redundancy. Was there something I did wrong or something else I should have done?
Thanks again for your help!

Hi!
It looks like your MX record is registering correctly. You can see that here:
http://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=mx%3anaomitoms.com&run=toolpage
That’s a tool that looks up all MX records associated with your domain. You’ll notice the following record:
MX naomitoms.com handled by mx.domain.com with a priority of 10If this is the only record necessary, your email should begin working. Just to clarify, is your email through Domain.com? Have you confirmed with them that this is the only record you need for your email to work correctly?

Oh! Actually just double checked my webmail and looks like the email does work after all, just must be a problem with my mail application. I’ll try and figure that one out… thanks for checking on the MX record for me!
