How do I change the headers on individual pages?
-
Hi –
I have a new blog, details are below. I’m pleased with the theme except in one respect: on a small laptop, when you change pages, the header and image remains the same so it’s not immediately clear that you’ve moved.
Is it possible somehow to use the photo on only the homepage – and to shrink the rest of the text of the headers on the rest of the pages, so it remains branded and consistent but they don’t look identical?
Many thanks

Hi Guy,
It is possible to remove the header image for all non-homepage pages. However, it’s going to require quite a bit of CSS code as we’ll need to address each individual page specifically.
Instead, what if we put some top border action on the active page in your menu (the one the reader is on). So, if they click on “Speaker/moderator” in your menu, they will see the Speaker/moderator menu item with a top border as long as they are on that page like this:
This way, they’ll have a better idea of what page they’re on.
Would that work?

Thanks for the prompt response, Jeremey. I’d prefer to have the CSS work done on the non-home pages; can you give me an idea of costs and timelines on that? If you’d rather take this to email my address is Guy at Clapperton dot co dot uk. Many thanks.

Hi Guy!
Sorry – I didn’t mean to imply that it would cost anything additional, just that we would need to specifically address each page that isn’t your homepage (which gets a bit tedious as you add pages). Here’s something we can start with. Can you place this under Appearance -> Customize -> CSS?
.page-id-1 .site-logo, .page-id-49 .site-logo, .page-id-58 .site-logo, .page-id-61 .site-logo, .page-id-75 .site-logo, .type-post .site-logo { display: none; }That should remove the image on all non-Home pages. Then, we can tweak it from there.

Done, and that’s already an improvement, thank you.
I wasn’t expecting you to offer your time for nothing – I have respect for people’s time!

Great! Any other adjustments you would like to make?

No, I think I’m happy with this – unless there’s a simple way to shrink the header on all but the main page? If there isn’t an easy way, don’t worry! Thanks again for your help.

How about adding something like this?
.page-id-1 .site-branding, .page-id-49 .site-branding, .page-id-58 .site-branding, .page-id-61 .site-branding, .page-id-75 .site-branding, .type-post .site-branding { font-size: 0.6em; }We would need to add that in addition to the CSS we’ve already used.

You guys are brilliant! Thanks.
One more question if I may. I’ve just been trying to add a Skype button to the sidebar, by putting HTML from Skype.com into a free text widget (I also tried going into text view and adding plain text).
WordPress seems to do something to the code so it just comes out as garbled text and doesn’t put a Skype button in (or my online calendar or any of the other little things I’ve tried).
Is there a way around this or have I come to the bit where a free WordPress.com site can only do *so* much..?
Thanks again – you’ve been terrific.

Are you using the code generator here?
http://www.skype.com/en/features/skype-buttons/create-skype-buttons/
That generator outputs a code using script tags. We strip script tags at WordPress.com for security reasons. If you’re interested, you can read a bit more about that here:
I’m afraid you won’t be able to use that generator.
Normally, we can just use a button that opens to your profile page (for a social network like Facebook or Twitter). However, with Skype, there isn’t really a profile to link to (that code does some magic where it auto-opens a call or a chat). I’m afraid I don’t have a great workaround for you!
