  Create a header image offline and then upload it into the blog – Dashboard – Appearance – Header
  Images should be at least 937 pixels wide. Suggested width is 937 pixels. Suggested height is 300 pixels.

  You can re-size the image in either a desktop image editing software http://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/#image-editing-software or online image editing software http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2009/11/28/ten-free-online-image-compression-and-optimzation-programs/ to fit the space you intend to use it in.
