How do I check Akismet spam to make sure comments are really spam?
-
I have scoured the help archives, but don’t seem to have a ‘manage’ page, or any links at all to my akismet spam page, which apparently I should have. Thanks.

goto your dashboard and goto your comments section, you will see a link to spam. There you can view any spam that the akismet has caught. There you can double check if the spam is really spam as some comments can mistakenly get labeled as spam. You can also delete all the spam. There’s really nothing else you can do in the spam section of the dashboard.

ok (thanks for answering!) I’ve done this, and it says “no spam” but the Akismet thing says it has caught 9, and only yesterday it had just caught 3, so I know they can’t be deleted yet. So why is the number ‘O’ in the comments section?
-
I don’t know maybe you deleted them by mistake or something. Or maybe the akismet deleted them for you…who knows.
-
And, so you know, the akismet number doesn’t change until you delete the spam yourself, from the spam section.

I haven’t deleted them, I’ve been trying to view them. akismet claims it deletes them after 15 days. My usual comment count has been dropping while my akismet spam count rises, and I can’t view it. On one of the forums I saw this link and modified it to connect to my blog, but I just got a message saying “cannot connect to akismet-admin.”

all help appreciated.

There was a report that there’s a bug with Akismet where it overreports spam caught. But we have no way of knowing if this is what’s happening here.
I suggest you contact support at akismet: I think it’s http://support.akismet.com/

The actual link now with the new system would be: http://humblewoodcutter.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?comment_status=spam
That said, there have been times in the past where spam count numbers would go up and people would not be able to review them. They would not all show up, or would only show up occasionally. I was one of the people caught in this and then all of a sudden when they made the 2.7 upgrade, I was then able to see all the spam it said it was catching. I’ve actually kept track of the number to make sure. It may be though that some are still getting only seeing part of their spam.
One thing to try is to go to settings > discussion and make sure that “Don’t discard spam on old posts” is selected under “Comment Moderation” and then make sure and click “save changes.” See if that makes a difference because I’m not sure what wordpress considers an “old” post.

Aha. Thank you everyone! Sacred Path, I have done as you said, I did have it set to automatically discard spam, so I’ve changed that and will see if it makes a diff. Cheers!Ok, back to eggnog.

You’re very welcome. In my experience, most of the spam I get is on older posts so I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.
